How we support private equity players

Founded in 1993, Alcimed is a consulting firm specialized in innovation and new markets development in life sciences. Spread over our 8 offices in the world (in France, Europe, Singapore and the USA), our team of 220 high-level explorers supports everyday decision-makers and business departments (marketing, research, innovation, strategy, CSR, etc.) in their innovation and new market development projects.

Our projects for private equity players cover diverse subjects such as strategic due diligence for buyers and sellers, strategic audits, market studies, defining development strategies, building road maps, and many more!

And our activities are not limited to the above-mentioned missions. The diversity of our clients (manufacturers, ETIs, innovative start-ups, institutions, etc.), the subjects we deal with, and the geographical areas we explore, enable us to master a wide range of missions and develop recognized expertise in our specialized sectors.

    Our missions

    Our expertise

Examples of projects carried out for our clients in the private equity sector

    • Due diligence for a start-up in the field of digital health

We helped a leading pharmaceutical company to evaluate the potential of a start-up company that had developed a new offering based on a connected bracelet for fertility measurement.

To do so, we performed a strategic due diligence of the targeted start-up, analyzing in particular the user experience and the medical interest perceived by gynecologists for their product.

Our project validated the firm’s interest in investing in the start-up and highlighted improvements in the marketing and commercialization of the device.

    • Strategic acquisition audit in the field of biopharmaceutical production

We assisted an investment fund in carrying out a strategic audit of a producer of stainless steel tanks in the biopharmaceutical and food-processing markets.

We assessed the manufacturer’s perception of its customers in both markets, and challenged the coherence between the offer and the market’s needs and expectations.

The evaluation of the development prospects in both sectors allowed us to confirm the interest of investing in this producer and to have visibility on the development potential in the next 5 years.

    • Vendor Due Diligence of a company specialized in medical devices for dependent elderly people

Our team assisted a company specializing in medical devices for the elderly in the preparation of a Vendor Due Diligence report with a view to a potential sale of its activities.

In order to present this investment opportunity to potential investors, Alcimed carried out a complete strategic audit: analysis of the potential market and of the market potential, customer segmentation, identification of market drivers and barriers, competitor analysis, regulatory analysis, critical opinion on the company’s 5-year business plan.

Our report summarized the opportunities and risks related to this investment, with neutrality, to inform the decision making of potential buyers.

    • Creation of a new due diligence process for a vaccine player

We supported a leading vaccine player in redesigning its current due diligence process to address several identified limitations: the absence of a common standard procedure for all, the lack of skills of some members involved and the lack of training program in place, the insufficient exhaustiveness in some parts of the risk analysis, or the lack of real-time sharing of progress on each business development project. In order to overcome these limitations, and to formalize a new set of standard procedures, our team has implemented a 4 key steps approach:

      1. A critical analysis of current practices
      2. A benchmark of the practices of other industrial players and investment funds
      3. The organization of a workshop to co-build the new process with the ‘due diligence’ team
      4. The development and sharing of key tools to be used in the process.

In the end, our project allowed the firm to define a new standard for its strategic due diligence exercises, with a trained and motivated team!

    • Refine the development strategy of a cosmetics company through a strategic audit of all its activities

One of our clients, a company specializing in cosmetics, active in many countries around the world, and having experienced a fairly rapid development through successive acquisitions, called upon our team in order to conduct a strategic audit of its activities.

Its product portfolio was extremely diversified, and the top management lacked visibility on its real points of strength on which to base its future development. Alcimed conducted a strategic audit covering the entire portfolio and markets, resulting in a simplification into 9 Strategic Business Areas (SBAs).

After an in-depth investigation, our diagnosis was shared, the SBAs likely to support the development were selected, and our work has enabled us to engage the firm’s teams on concrete action plans in line with a new strategy that is clear for all.

    • Strategic audit of the activities of a healthcare SME to define its new 5-year roadmap

Our team supported the management committee of an innovative SME in the field of diagnostics in rethinking its 5-year strategy and in building a roadmap to raise funds to support its new development ambition.

To do so, we conducted a strategic audit of the company’s activities worldwide, coupled with a market study in several key geographies.

Our mission led to the co-construction of a 5-year strategic roadmap with our client, which enabled to validate several strategic decisions (discontinuation of some activities, development of others), to embark the internal team towards a new vision built in echo with the market, and to convince potential investors to support the projected growth.

    • Economic viability assessment of a potential new industrial site

Our client, a local authority, identified a key industrial opportunity and wanted to take the lead in imagining a production unit and studying its economic viability.

After analyzing the market and identifying the market position to take, our teams built different positioning scenarios of an industrial offer that we modeled around attainable profitability challenges.

Our work enabled the validation of a market opportunity and an industry project that would be economically viable. Our clients could then validate the relevance of launching an engineering strategy to build their industrial site, as well as building a public-private vehicle that could govern the site.

    • Analysis of the syringe market in China

One of our customers, a leading player in medical devices, wanted to enter the Chinese market and needed a better understanding of the Chinese market specifications and market potential in order to develop a clear growth strategy and assess the resources needed to achieve its development ambition in the area.

Our team first conducted a detailed analysis of the competition. Then we explored the current practices, needs and expectations of potential buyers and users of syringes, before deciphering the regulations and the impact of local cultural specificities on the market access of the company’s products. We then assessed the market potential and projected potential market shares for the firm.

This exploration work allowed us to recommend to our client the best strategy to undertake to establish itself in China and become a future leader in this new market.
