What are the key stakes of business models in the healthcare industry?

Technological advances and societal challenges are driving changes in behavior, leading to the emergence of new practices and forcing healthcare companies to reinvent themselves and transform their business models.

In this dynamic environment, there are several key success factors to consider when defining or rethinking a business model in the healthcare industry:

    • Integrating the impact of new digital technologies
    • Meeting the challenges of sustainability and social responsibility
    • Responding to new customer behavior (patients, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, …)

How we support players in the healthcare industry with their business model projects

Founded in 1993, Alcimed is a consulting firm specialized in innovation and new business in life sciences. Spread over our 8 offices in the world (in France, Europe, Singapore and the USA), our team of 220 high-level explorers supports everyday corporate management and operational decision-makers (heads of marketing, R&D, innovation, strategy, CSR, industrial operations, etc.) in their innovation and new business projects.

In our business model projects for healthcare players we support our clients in defining or redefining their business models in order to determine the levers of value creation best suited to their activities and build a solid business plan.

And our activities in the healthcare sector are not limited to business model projects. The diversity of our clients (industrial players, SMEs innovative start-ups, public institutions, etc.), the subjects we deal with, and the geographical areas we explore, enable us to master a wide range of projects: patient experience, innovation strategies, use cases of AI in healthcare,…

    Our missions

    Our expertise

Examples of business model projects carried out for our clients in the healthcare industry

    • Marketing business cases to explore innovative business models for services through concrete business cases

Our team assisted a pharmaceutical company in the development of a business model for an application to diagnose the different states and severity of depression.

Several models were considered (Free, Freemium, Premium, Paymium) and were evaluated according to patient behavior, price levels and the possibility of reimbursement by insurers in particular.

Each model was analyzed in the form of a complete business case and was the subject of strategic partnership scenarios, which allowed our client to project itself and choose the best model for its application.

    • Study of innovative business models in the animal health sector

We worked with a leading player in the animal health sector who wanted to imagine new business models in connection with new services to be developed. We organized an “inspiration” workshop bringing together players from different sectors such as Butagaz, Xerox, Samsung and Somfy.

This workshop comprised 2 steps: the first one consisted in better understanding the history, the good practices and the key success factors of these inspiring companies’ models, and the second one consisted in co-constructing with our client the most adapted model to their case.

Our approach enabled our client to draw inspiration from other non-competitive players to define an innovative business model that would differentiate themselves from existing models.

    • Benchmark analysis of business models for the transition to a new value proposition

A company in the pharmaceutical sector was looking to make the transition to a new value proposition, likely to induce profound changes in its sales functions.

We helped them broaden and challenge their current vision by exploring existing market models, notably through a competitive benchmark, and by analyzing their customers’ needs and expectations.

Our team organized several workshops with our customer’s teams, resulting in a complete set of specifications for the future business and the associated roadmap for the upcoming transition.

    • Evaluation of business models for a partnership in e-health

We assisted one of our clients, a leading industrial player in healthcare, in the evaluation of a strategic opportunity in the e-health speech disorders market.

To do so, our team conducted a literature review and interviews to identify the players, understand and evaluate the teletherapy market for speech and language disorders. We interviewed potential partners to understand their solutions, their current business models and to evaluate their willingness to partner with our client. For this search for partners, our team developed an interactive Excel tool to describe and visualize the potential partnering models between our client and each of the companies studied.

In the end, our client was able to short-list partners, meet with them and conclude an agreement with one of them.

    • Development of a business model and business plan for a synthetic biology R&D platform

We supported one of our clients in refining and finalizing their business model and business plan on a biotechnology R&D service infrastructure providing expertise in several synthetic biology technologies.

In a first step we challenged our client’s scenarios about competitive positioning and application markets to focus on. We then identified potential customers and funding options and defined the potential revenue of the platform, nourished by field insights.

In the end, a first version of the business model and business plan was co-constructed and further refined to address both academic and industrial actors.

    • Receptivity study of a synthetic biology technology to develop a business model

We supported our client, a company in the biotechnology industry specialized in gene engineering on micro-organisms, in better understanding the potential for microorganism development in the healthcare, cosmetics, food, and feed sectors.

Our team help our client in defining and prioritizing its market by performing interviews with key opinion leaders and representatives of industrial players located in the sectors of interest.

The key expected features were derived in a consistent value proposition, and subsequently a refined business model on the sector with the highest interest was developed.
