The SIDO 2020 occurred in Lyon on September 3rd and 4th. This sixth edition of the Artificial Intelligence and Connected Objects exhibition has been reshaped due to COVID-19 context. Visitors had the choice between going physically to the exhibition or subscribe to digital sessions. Despite a lower number of visitors, this edition was once again very enriching, with no less than 300 exhibitors and 70 talks dedicated to industrial innovations! We share with you the main 3 topics that made us stop by during our walks through the corridors of the Cité Internationale. 5G, MaaS and Data disrupting business organizations are on the menu. Ready? Get on board!
5G is coming! What are the use-cases in the Mobility sector?
Let us start with a burning topic: 5G. Seen as an opportunity or as a threat, here are two concrete examples in the Mobility sector:
- The company Orange has launched a 5G experiment at Antwerp’s port in Belgium. Collaborating with several industrial partners, this project aims to test concrete 5G applications and the Quality on Demand concept, i.e. the possibility to propose a variable quality of service for each slice of 5G waves. This concept of network slicing gives the opportunity for Orange to propose a dedicated slice for industry 4.0 applications. Main advantages of this concept include increased performance standard levels and reduced significantly network latency. For example, during critical interventions, Orange could propose a dedicated slice with optimal performances to public services such as ambulances, firefighters, police…
- SCNF has also launched a 5G trial within Rennes’ train station in France. The objective is to test the 5G technology in a high-density area. As of today, SNCF targets mainstream use-cases. For example, to prepare the 2024 Olympics that will take place in France and its massive flow of visitors, SNCF is testing an interaction system with instant translation. Fluidness of interactions is reaching a very high level of performance thanks to the reduction of network latency with 5G.
Indeed, 5G applications are full of promises! For industrials, these new performance standards are an opportunity not only to improve existing use-cases but also to invent new ones.
Mobility as a Service, or MaaS: large-scale projects!
After 5G, we were captured by the topic Mobility as a Service, or Maas. Saint-Etienne Métropole is innovating with the release of a complete MaaS solution. Launched on the September 22nd, the Moovizy 2 application combines all kind of transport modes available on the territory with the possibility of booking and paying through a single app.
The Transdev team involved in this MaaS project has unveiled few key success factors:
- A customized governance to federate all stakeholders. Here, the Métropole has played a key role to federate all partners (sometimes competitors) around this solution.
- An evolutive cybersecurity solution management. Indeed, network infrastructures have been designed and installed according to current security standards, while being open and customizable for evolutions to come.
- Define clear Key Performance Indicators. From the beginning of the project, the notion of customer centricity has been applied, especially to define relevant KPIs (i.e. use rate, qualitative feedbacks from end-users and partners…)
This MaaS solution is the first in France. Will this inspire other cities and become a standard in all urban areas? We are looking forward to finding out!
Data is shaking business organizations!
After digital transformation, many industrials have data management in mind and players have lots of questions. How to collect data? How to make use of the data? What value could data bring to my company? These kinds of questions are impacting companies and are pushing them to rethink their organization.
During the SIDO 2020 exhibition, Michelin shared key lessons about their Connected Mobility solutions that they have been using for the past few years, such as:
- It is essential to define a master data management strategy before launching a data management approach. This strategy should be designed to integrate company’s evolutions, especially in case of reorganization or mergers/acquisitions of new entities.
- Similar to the MaaS solution, a customized governance is crucial here. This governance should be in line with company’s DNA. As an example, Michelin has created 3 direction functions related to data (Chief Data Officer, Chief Digital Officer, and Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer).
- Data without context is useless. When talking about data management, a key point is to analyze data collected with contextual elements.
Before thinking of new offers and solutions connected to data, it seems primordial to define and deploy a customized strategy, specific for each company, in line with its DNA and objectives.
5G, MaaS, and Data: at Alcimed, we are working on these topics on a day-to-day basis with our customers. Together, we imagine new use-cases and applications, we validate them on the field, we identify potential partners, and so much more! Do you have uncharted territories on these topics?
